Irresistible Force (Japan) Versus Immovable Object (Okinawa) Struggle Without End?

ABSTRACT
In this presentation he explores matters raised in his recent book with Satoko Oka Norimatsu (Resistant Islands, 2nd edition 2018), outlines recent judicial, political, diplomatic and ecological developments with a bearing on the "Okinawa problem," and considers the tactics and strategy employed by Okinawa's nonviolent social movements on the one hand and the Japanese state on the other in the long-running contest. He will consider possible outcomes, and he welcomes exchange of views with participants in the meeting.

Gavan McCormack is Emeritus Professor of the Australian National University in Canberra, a fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. and a founding editor of the Asia-Pacific Journal - Japan Focus. He was Visiting Professor in the Peace Studies program at ICU in 2003-2005. His recent publications include: Resistant Islands: Okinawa Confronts Japan and the United States, Lanham, Maryland: Rowman and Littlefield, 2012, (co-authored with Satoko Oka Norimatsu), second, revised and expanded, paperback edition, 2018 (Japanese, Korean, and Chinese editions available of first edition), and The State of the Japanese State: Contested Identity, Direction and Role, Folkestone, Kent, Renaissance Books, 2008.
