AY2020 SSRI-IGC Symposium (ICU)
The Korean War at 70: The Unending War and Its Lasting Spell
As the year that marks the 70th anniversary of the break-out of the Korean War draws to an end, the symposium seeks to open an inquiry into the longevity of the war. Why is it that the war has continued for 70 years without an end but only with an armistice? Is it possible that it has been not only destructive but also productive? Is it possible that it has continued as it has engaged in a “gale of creative destruction”? Is it possible that not only did the war wreak havoc on the lives and environment on the peninsula and beyond but it also has produced long-lasting spell that still haunt the countries that are part of the war? Is it possible that their relationships and the regional order of Northeast Asia are still under its spell? This symposium brings together leading scholars of the war from around the world to analyze and discuss the war’s lasting legacies and ways to overcome them. It seeks to revisit the old war to shed light on the contemporary world spell-bound by a chain of events that started 70 years ago and has not ended.
