ABSTRACT
Pope Francis' visit to Japan on Nov. 23-26 will offer a great opportunity for Tokyo to
nurture and strengthen its ties with the Holy See. The Pope's travel to Japan will be
the first by a Roman Pontiff in 38 years. The two drivers of the Holy See's diplomatic
activism are engaging with countries and major international organizations to promote
the well-being of humanity, and fulfilling the mission of the Church to promote the
values of the Gospel. Since his inauguration, Pope Francis has acted as a global
advocate for human dignity and justice, upholding the moral imperative of caring for
the poor and marginalized. Pope Francis' visit could create new synergies between
Japan and the Holy See for the promotion of peace and human development in Asia.
Closer ties and deeper communications with the Holy See would offer great benefits
to both countries and the rest of Asia.
