The COVID-19 pandemic struck hard at the very heart of traditional ways of teaching and learning throughout the world. In higher education, faculty and staff were pressed to show resilience, ingenuity and a sense of calm as we were faced with the lockdowns and school closures. With the rapid move to alternative modes of teaching and learning, students and faculty needed to be innovative and persevering in efforts to reconfigure teaching and learning. Several questions come to mind as we face the post-pandemic world shortly: (1) What were/are the successful strategies in adjusting to these changes in terms of effective education? (2) How can we prepare our students and faculty post-pandemic in higher education where student and faculty motivation were greatly challenged? and (3) What are the possible barriers and solutions as we move into the post-pandemic era?
We have invited a seasoned faculty from a liberal arts college (Hokusei Gakuen University) who will share with us his past and present effort to deal with the changing needs and concerns of faculty and students. Professor Toru Kataoka, a faculty in the Department of Psychology and Applied Communication, previously taught in secondary schools as well before teaching in higher education. Not only will he be sharing his views on college teaching but also his passion for promoting peace among college students. An interactive discussion including questions and answers will follow.
In the afternoon, Professor Kataoka will be available for an informal session over coffee and tea on campus. Please let us know if you are interested. Please send a message to: Sophie Yanagii at g23677e@icu.ac.jp.
The lecture will be in Japanese; however, he will be happy to speak in English.
This lecture event is sponsored by ICU Institute for Education and Service, and part of EDU118: Psychological Perspectives on Effective Teaching and Learning.
