Worldwide, there is an increasing interest among universities in cultivating character leadership. Harvard, Oxford, Baylor University, Wake Forest and The University of Hong Kong (HKU), to name just a few, all have thriving character leadership programs. Character leadership is no longer considered a "nice to have" but essential in navigating today's uncertainties.
On 17-18 October, the Institute for Educational Research and Service of ICU is hosting two introductory workshops on character leadership addressing what it is, why it's so important, and how you can begin cultivating it in your work or educational context. The workshops will discuss:
- ・the powers of both quiet and communal leadership,
- ・the role of identity, meaning and friendships in leadership,
- ・the unique challenges faced by early emerging adult leaders,
- ・cultivating humble courage as well as other "super habits",
- ・a simple roadmap for the character cultivation journey, and
- ・the overall question of whether such a program would be helpful at ICU (and Japan more generally).
The workshops are led by Dr. Steve Gaultney, one of the founding designers of HKU's flagship leadership program, Lead for Life (L4L). L4L is one of the largest undergraduate character leadership programs globally and now a credit-bearing course at HKU. Last academic year, L4L engaged over 600 undergraduate students and 110 mentor participants. Students represented all ten of HKU's faculties. Qualitative research from the lived experiences of L4L student and mentor participants will be shared during the workshops.
The workshops will be conducted in English; they are open to all.
