The 192nd Asian Forum, "Wheat connecting Egypt and USA: Revisiting Ancient Kamut and US Food Aid/PL480."

Historically, wheat has a strong tie with the Middle East. The Ancient Orient's ‘Fertile Crescent’ was a birthplace for the first wheat that humans cultivated, and Egypt used to be a center for the Roman Empire's Mediterranean wheat trade. On the contrary, many countries in the contemporary region depend on wheat import; especially, Egypt is the world biggest importer of wheat. This presentation examines how US food aid, PL480, developed and impacted on Egypt’s food security, with an experimental reflection on patent issues through an example of the Ancient Kamut in recent organic food trends.
