The Many Faces of Kobayashi Kiyochika:
From the Everyday to Political Propaganga

Kobayashi KIYOCHIKA (1847–1915) is well known for his intense engagement with Japanese and Western artistic practices in his prints and paintings. His output included experimentations with light and shadow in Tokyo landscapes, paintings and prints that gave a comical twist to traditional themes, and biting political satire and militaristic propaganda. This talk focuses on the new visual vocabulary of the face that Kiyochika introduced, capable of expressing light—and very dark–humor.
