PEACE & RECONCILIATION WEEK DETAILSSpecial Lectures
6/2 (Mon) afternoon: Special Lecture by Takashi Nemoto (Professor Emeritus at Sophia University / ICU Part-time Lecturer) – "Reconciliation between Myanmar and Japan"
Are you able to talk about your painful memories to others? Would you even want to talk about them in the first place? In this lecture, I will introduce three ‹negative memories> told by the people of Burma who suffered under Japanese occupation during the Asia-Pacific War of 80 years ago. Each of them was told to me personally. How should we, living in the 21st century Japan, listen and share them? I would like to consider this question in relation to the theme of Reconciliation.
6/3 (Tue) afternoon: Special Lecture by Yuhiro Hasegawa (Former UN Special Representative) – "Peace and Reconciliation from the UN Perspective: Practices in East Timor and Rwanda"
6/6 (Fri) afternoon: Special Lecture by Naoyuki Umemori (Professor at Waseda University / Institute for International Reconciliation Studies) – "Reconciliation from an Academic Perspective"Documentary Film Screenings
6/4 (Wed) afternoon: "Lilac in Mist" (In cooperation with ERIFF International Reconciliation Film Festival)
6/5 (Thu) afternoon: "So Long Asleep: Waking the Ghosts of a War" (Public lecture "Reconciliation after Conflict" / Periods 5-6)
This film follows a project to return the remains of Korean people left in Japan even after the end of World War II back to their homeland. Has the war truly ended? Has the past been fully reconciled? Is genuine reconciliation possible? Based on this film, which raises many such important questions, we will reflect and discuss these issues together with the participants.Presentation of Student Deliverables

Documentary Film Screening and Talk Event『History of Tenryumura』
During World War II, in the village of Tenryū, Nagano Prefecture, many foreign prisoners of war and people forcibly brought from China and Korea were made to work on dam construction—many lost their lives. To honor their memory—This documentary was created by students at Middlebury College, inspired by the wishes of the villagers who seek to remember and share this painful history.
『Removed by Force』
This documentary tells the story of the persecution and human rights violations suffered by Japanese Americans in Hawai‘i. Japanese subtitles were created as part of a collaborative project between students at International Christian University and Middlebury College. We invite you to engage with this history—carried forward by the hands of a new generation.Reception &Mini Concert
