Summary of lecture:
During the Meiji period, the first Japanese scientists emerged. The process through which these pioneers learned, experimented, and sought to apply their knowledge to society—using newly acquired Western languages and the mathematical expressions that form the language of science—can now be glimpsed in historical materials such as notebooks and draft manuscripts. “Scientists’ archival materials” not only illuminate the history of science in Japan but also offer clues to how scientific knowledge became integrated into local cultures. In this lecture, I will explore the potential of scientists’ archival materials from modern Japan as a basis for new approaches to the cultural history of science.
