Taketori monogatari, or The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, is one of the most widely known literary classics in Japan. One of the reasons for its popularity is that it has been included in Japanese textbooks used in junior high schools and high schools. Another reason is wide adaptation of its fairy tale version named Kaguya-hime, or Princess Kaguya. In fact, fairy tale versions Kaguya-hime differ from original Taketori monogatari in many points. This presentation overviews how Taketori monogatari was inherited to modern versions.
