Overview:

Ameliorating bilateral relations between Korea and Japan have come and gone for quite some time, but with no foreseeable resolution at hand, for the political-historical disagreements and the current world pandemic contributing to its stagnant nature. The strained relations pose serious challenges and opportunities for the next generation of young adults in higher education. The media and the general public's perception of cultural exchanges appear re-merging in Japan, Korean, and beyond (e.g., BTS, anime, K-dramas). Both academic and general debates about improving the relations have been aplenty and we are all hard-pressed for camaraderie at the collective and personal levels.

As such, we would like to create an opportunity to share our mutual concerns with an eye toward developing the "New Vision of Peace and Justice" through the Japan-Korea Student Summit 2021. The goal of the Summit is to promote and exchange ideas and opinions on peace-related topics among Japanese and Korean students in a two-day Zoom interactive session. We have selected a group of 15 student participants from several universities in Japan and Korea. The Summit will include Plenary Speech (#1), faculty panel discussion and preparation meetings for students' group presentation on Day 1, and Plenary Speech (#2) , group presentations and discussion, and preparations and logistics for creating the Summit Statement on Day 2. One main outcome of the Summit is to develop a written "Korea-Japan Peace Statement" in three languages (English, Japanese, and Korean) with implementable action plans for the future for wider distribution in Korea and Japan.
