Abstract:
This lecture will concentrate on the everyday strategies that people use in conflict-affected societies to make life liveable. Drawing on fieldwork research in Colombia, Lebanon and Northern Ireland, the lecture will examine how people use rational coping and survival strategies that deliver negative peace. The effect of these is often to deliver a tolerable quality of life. Yet, this tolerable quality of life means that people are often trapped in a holding pattern of long-lasting conflict. The lecture is interested in the micro-level or the everyday level. Through everyday actions, people on the ground shape peace, conflict and the conditions in between.
