Abstract:
In recent years a crisis now approach has gained ascendency in addressing mental health crises. The drop-in crisis centers and phone hotlines of the 60s and 70s and the suicide emergency programs developed largely from grassroots efforts to address growing community need. These foreshadow the creation of current mental health crisis services. This talk will focus on the development of mental health crisis services grounded in the value of lived experience in crisis programs. Valuing the lived experience of mental illness promotes equity and justice. We will explore the role of valuing lived experience as a pathway to hiring those with lived experience of mental health crisis to be recovery support specialists. These specialists welcome those in crisis and often have exceptional empathy with them, a skill that deescalates difficulties and fosters peace. In mobile crisis response programs with police, crisis phone and in-person response teams and Living Room drop-in centers individuals in recovery can play a most important role. Justice for them leads to peace for those they serve. How to create a service setting that is friendly and empowering for those with lived experience and what the future may hold  for those with lived experience will also be considered.
