Summary of Activities
Being a leader of liberal arts education in Japan, ICU has a renowned record also in the field of History of Science and Philosophy of Science. The students, although modest in their population, have enjoyed lectures and guidances by prominent scholars of the field since the school’s early years. Professor Masao Watanabe, who has been at the center of such an educational effort, brought the first endowment chair in the field to ICU in 1988. After his retirement, the activities in the field were taken over by the former History of Science Research Center.
In 1995, Professor Yoichiro P. Murakami joined ICU as Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer Distinguished Professor of Science, and the Institute for the Study of Christianity and Culture took over activities of the former research center. At the institute, the “History of Science Project,” has been broadening the range of interest into the area of STS (Science, Technology and Society).
