"Locating Okinawa: Tradition and Innovation in New Okinawan Music"
(「沖縄音楽における伝統と革新」)
Okinawa is well known in Japan as a region rich in traditional music and performing arts. Since the early 20th century there has also been a strong movement within the islands to create new musical styles incorporating a variety of Okinawan and non-Okinawan elements. This presentation will look particularly at the use of language and musical scales in this new music, and consider the ways in which these elements have been used to locate Okinawa within a Japanese cultural framework.
