The Center for Gender Studies at International Christian University (ICU) is happy to invite you to attend a virtual conversation with Juliana Buriticá Alzate, Aoko Matsuda, Akiko Matsuo, and Miwako Ozawa. In this Webinar, we are going to discuss the production and consumption of feminist books from three different perspectives: writing, translating, and publishing.

Juliana BURITICA ALZATE
Juliana Buriticá Alzate is an independent scholar and literary translator based in the UK, and a research fellow at the Center for Gender Studies at International Christian University (ICU). Her research brings together queer and feminist theory to explore representations of mothering and related embodied experiences in contemporary Japanese fiction. She has translated Aoko Matsuda’s Where the Wild Ladies Are into Spanish (Quaterni, 2022) and is currently working on a collection of poetry by Hiromi Itō (Insensata, forthcoming 2023). From April 2022 she will be working as a Departmental Lecturer of Modern Japanese Literature at the University of Oxford.
Aoko MATSUDA
Aoko Matsuda is a writer and translator. In 2013, her debut book, Stackable, was nominated for the Mishima Yukio Prize and the Noma Literary New Face Prize. In 2019, her short story ‘The Woman Dies’ (from the collection The Woman Dies), was shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Award. The English translation of her collection of stories Where the Wild Ladies Are was included on TIME’s list of the 10 Best Fiction Books of 2020. Where the Wild Ladies Are was also shortlisted for the Ray Bradbury Award for Science Fiction, Fantasy & Speculative Fiction sponsored by the LA Times, and won the Firecracker Award (fiction category) and the World Fantasy Literary Award (best collection category). She has translated work by Karen Russell, Amelia Gray, and Carmen Maria Machado into Japanese.
Akiko MATSUO
Akiko Matsuo is CEO and editor of etc.books. After working as an editor at a publishing company for 15 years, in 2018, she established the feminist publishing company etc.books. In 2019, she launched the feminist magazine Etcetera. Works published by etc.books include Makino Masako's Chikan to wa nanika? Higai to enzai wo meguru shakaigaku and bell hooks' Feminism Is for Everbody (translated by Hotta Midori). She is also one of the organizers of Flower Demo, a movement calling for the eradication of sexual violence.
Miwako OZAWA
Miwako Ozawa holds an M.A. in Humanities and Sociology at the University of Tokyo and finished the Ph.D. program without dissertation at the same university. She also holds an M.A. at the University College London. After working as an editor, she became an interpreter and translator. She has translated Linh Dinh's Postcards from the End of America, Lynn Enright's Vagina: A Re-education, Walter Tevis' The Queen's Gambit, and Jenny Zhang's Sour Heart: Stories. She has co-translated Carmen Maria Machado's Her Body and Other Parties. Her translation of Machado's In the Dream House will be published in June 2022.

Letizia Guarini is an Assistant Professor at the Center for Gender Studies at International Christian University (ICU). Her research focuses on the father-daughter relationship in contemporary Japanese literature. She is also interested in the representation of breastfeeding in contemporary fiction.
