Rage and Resilience 2nd meeting
Thursday,January 30,2025Categories: Bookclub
CGS will be holding our 2nd reading group on the topic of rage as power.
In times of uncertainty, marked by ongoing violence and the hateful rhetoric of world leaders, many of us feel powerless, afraid, and angry. But how can we channel that anger? In this reading group, we will explore works that examine anger as a source of power and resilience.
For the second session, we will read I Want a President (1992) by Zoe Leonard, translated by Fumina Hamasaki. This poem questions political representation and highlights perspectives from LGBTQ+ communities and marginalized groups. It was inspired by poet and activist Eileen Myles' candidacy in the 1992 U.S. presidential election. Running as an independent against wealthy male candidates, Myles identified as "openly female" and was part of a community directly affected by poverty and the AIDS crisis.
We will provide copies of the text in both English and Japanese.
