Rage and Resilience 4th (and final) meeting
Tuesday,February 11,2025Categories: Bookclub
CGS will be holding our 4th and final reading group on the topic of rage as power. In times of uncertainty, marked by ongoing violence and the hateful rhetoric of world leaders, many of us feel powerless, afraid, and angry. But how can we channel that anger? In this reading group, we will explore works that examine anger as a source of power and resilience.
In the fourth session, we will read Audre Lorde’s The Uses of Anger: Women Responding to Racism (1981), translated by Takeo Suzuki. In this essay, Lorde examines how Black women’s anger is both suppressed and harnessed as a force for liberation. She argues that while anger is a legitimate response to oppression, it is often misunderstood and feared. Focusing on the intersection of personal experience and social structures, she explores how anger facilitates dialogue among women and serves as a catalyst for transformation. Lorde asserts that anger is not inherently destructive; rather, it brings clarity and enables the analysis of power structures. Furthermore, she critiques the notion that anger should be suppressed and instead emphasizes its creative and political potential.
