Bach to Japan: Reflections on Teaching and Rewriting the Cultural History of Japan

Professor Caiger was born in Japan and graduated from Sydney University and studied history at the University of London. He received his Ph.D. from the Australian National University where he began teaching Japanese history since 1966. Now retired, he is reviewing his life as a scholar and teacher of modern Japanese cultural history. He is the author (along with his former colleague Richard Mason) of one of the best general surveys of Japanese history: A History of Japan (Revised Edition), Tuttle Publishing. His talk will give a glimpse into the personal and professional life of one of the leading Western scholars of modern Japanese history. The title “Bach to Japan,” refers to his first visit to ICU in the 1960s when he attended a concert by the Sendai Bach Choir held in the ICU Church. Everyone welcome.
