Every term the Center for Gender Studies (CGS) at ICU hosts student-led reading groups in which we read together a book closely. Certain books may be difficult to read by ourselves, but when we read together it’s better. We can ask each other when we don't understand, and we can continue enjoying our reading together!

1) Gender and Sexuality, and U.S. military bases in Okinawa

While also in the ‘main land’ there are many voices of protest against the growing presence of U.S. military bases in Okinawa, in those expressions there is a tendency to overlook the fact that the imposition of the bases is not only a colonial policy, but also a sexist policy. In this reading group we will read several books and think critically about the concentration of U.S. military bases in Okinawa from a gender and sexuality perspective. (The reading list will be introduced during the first meeting).

Hosting dates: Mondays at lunch time (12:40-13:50)

Starting from April 23rd, 2018 (Monday)
Location: Center for Gender Studies, International Christian University ERB-1- 301

Coordinator: HANYU Yuki (Doctoral Candidate, University of Tokyo/Research Institute Assistant, CGS)

2) Derald Wing Sue, Microaggressions in Everyday Life: Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation. 2010, Hoboken: Wiley and Sons

‘You work even if you have a disability, you’re great!’

‘Oh, you’re in Science even if you’re a girl’

‘Gay and straight people are all the same, we’re human beings’

We understand that when people say things like these, they think they’re praising us and cheering us up, but still there’s something that doesn’t feel quite right… In the recent years “microaggressions” have been gaining attention. Microaggressions are words and actions based on prejudice, even if they are not considered blatant discrimination.

That experience I had a while ago, something I’ve recently said to a friend, what should I do if someone says those things to me again? … Let’s think about these issues together while reading an introductory book on the theme.

Starting from April 18th (Wednesday)
Location: Center for Gender Studies, International Christian University ERB-1- 301
