“Middle Eastern Studies and Gender Orientalism”

By Prof. Hiroko Minesaki

(Seikei University, Cultural Anthropology)

Date & Time:  January 29, Monday, 2024, 11:30-12:40

Language:  Japanese (No translation)

Orientalism is deeply gendered. This fact leads to the term “Gender Orientalism”.

Gender Orientalism not only affects our gaze toward women in the Middle East, but even more importantly, has been used to legitimize the colonial rule or the military occupation of the area throughout history. Exactly at this moment, Israel is fully making use of Gender Orientalism in its aggression toward Gaza.

Discussing the gap between discourses and realities, this lecture aims to find a way to deconstruct gender Orientalism. Questions and comments from the audience are welcomed.
