FinishedReading Group Winter Term: ①The Argonauts ②The Many Feminist Perspectives on India
Friday,November 29,2019CGS Reading group Fall term 2019: Join us!
Every term the Center for Gender Studies (CGS) at ICU hosts student-led reading groups in which we read together a book closely. Certain books may be difficult to read by ourselves, but when we read together it’s better. We can ask each other when we don't understand, and we can continue enjoying our reading together!
①The Argonauts
Title: The Argonauts
Author: Maggie Nelson
Publisher: Graywolf Press
Year of publication: 2016
This genre-bending memoir offers a fresh, fierce, and timely thinking about desire, identity, and the limitations and possibilities of love and language. At its center is a romance: the story of falling in love with a fluidly gendered partner, as well as a firsthand account of the complexities and joys of (queer) family-making. The author binds her personal experience to a rigorous exploration of what iconic thinkers have said about sexuality, gender, and the vexed institutions of marriage and child-rearing. Her insistence on radical individual freedom and the value of care taking becomes the rallying cry of this thoughtful, unabashed, uncompromising book (based on the publisher's description).

②The Many Feminist Perspectives on India: Reading Recent Articles
In this group, we will read various short articles, relating to issues of gender and sexuality in India, which will include women's mobilization in public spaces, the queer rights movement, and the different feminisms visible in different parts of India. The articles discussed would be from the work of the group organizer Priyanka Borpujari, who is an award-winning journalist from India and is currently a student at ICU. In the first session, we will have an overview of two articles: one about the idea of the identity of "Indian woman", and the second, a story from a brothel in a small town in India.
