On this institute

Summary of Activities

Since its establishment in 1963, the Institute for the Study of Christianity and Culture has been undertaking research of Christianity in itself and its impact on both the Eastern and Western cultures. In 1995, the institute took over research projects from the former History of Science endowment program, and added to its research areas the study of scientific thoughts in relation to Christianity. In all these fields, emphasis has been laid specifically on perspectives from the broad-definition humanities as well as cultural history.

The institute’s open lecture program currently consists of three branches: 1) Lecture series under a common theme by several lecturers; 2) History of Science Open Forum; and 3) special topic lectures by outside lecturers. Some lectures also appear in the institute’s publications including HUMANITIES: Christianity and Culture. In an attempt to compensate the journal’s limited reach, efforts have been made to establish an on-line text database of its articles. In 1998, the articles in issues of 1994 and after became to appear on the university’s homepage and on the on-line retrieval system of the National Center for Scientific Information Systems, Tokyo. The institute launched also in 1998 the only Japanese-language newsletter in the field of history of science.
