受講者の皆さんへのひとこと

• Algebra I では、代数構造の中でも最もシンプルな群について学びました。群論では、非常に少ない公理からとても深い定理がどんどん証明されていきます。おそらく演算の本質的部分が、この中に表現されているのだと思います。一方、身近にある代数構造を持ったものとしては、整数、有理数、実数、複素数といった数や、行列などが思い浮かぶとおもいますが、これらはともに、加法と、乗法の両方が定義されています。その二つの演算の間には、分配法則が成り立っています。環とは、このように、加法と乗法の二つの演算が定義されており、分配法則が成り立つものです。 加法に関しては、可換群になることを要請しますが、乗法に関しては、モノイド(単位元のある半群)になることだけを仮定します。この乗法が可換なものを可換環、可換でないものを非可換環といいます。かなり、違った性質を持っています。可換環では、整数全体のなす有理整数環とか、多項式のなす多項式環などを良い環と考え、これらの性質をそれぞれの環が持つかどうかを考えて行きます。一方非可換環では、ある次数の正方行列全体のなす全行列環を良い環と考え、その性質を持つかどうかを考えて行きます。可換環論は、整数論、代数幾何学へとつながり、非可換環論は、表現論などへと発展して行きます。この授業では、その基礎の部分を学びますが、多少、可換環論の部分が多いかと思います。

  2010年度から新しいカリキュラムのもとで代数学I, II までで 代数学 III がなくなり、そのかわり、週３時限のコースとなりました。それに伴って教科書も買えました。しかし代数学 III で扱っていたガロア理論がカバーできなくなってしまったため、その部分はなるべく、数学特論 (Topics of Mathematics) でカバーすることにし、代数学 II では体と体の拡大の基本理論のみを扱うことにしました。ガロア理論に興味のあるかたは、代数学 III のホームページも参考にして下さい。また、下記のそれぞれの参考書を見て下さい。

• 講義は、非常にコンパクトになっています。それは、皆さんに、実際に頭と手を動かしてもらう演習が大事だからと思うからです。数学では、いつでもそうですね。問題は、すべて解こうと努力して下さい。演習では、解けなかった問題を考えられると良いですね。
• Please read the relevant section(s) (see SCHEDULE) before and after the lecture. Try to solve at least three problems from each set of exercises and turn in on the due date. It is essential to spend time to solve exercises and understand examples in the textbook. It is also helpful to review old quizzes on the web. Do not hesitate to ask questions in class or elsewhere. Alhough I write the first edition of this book more than twenty years ago, my goals for it remain the same. I want students to receive a solid introduction to the traditional topics. I want readers to come away with the view that abstract algebra is a contemporary subject - that its concepts and methodologies are beging used by working mathematicians, computer scientists, physicists, and chemists. I want students to enjoy reading the book. To this end, I have included lines from popular songs, poems, quotations, biographies, historical notes, dozens of photographs, hundreds of figures, numberous tables and charts, and reproductions of stams and currency that honor mathematicians. I want students to be able to do computations and to write proofs. Accordingly, I have included an abuncance of exercises to develop both skills.

Textbook (2005, 2006, 2008)

This is the same textbook used for Algebra I. Quote from the back cover:

This is a high level introduction to abstract algebra which is aimed at readers whose interests lie in mathematics and in the information and physical sciences. In addition to introducing the main concepts of modern algebra, the book contains numerous applications, which are utility and relevance of algebra today.
The importance of proof is stressed and rigorous proofs of almost all results are given. But care has been taken to lead the reader through the proofs by gentle stages. There are nearly 400 problems, of varying degrees of difficulty, to test the reader's skill and progress.
The book should be suitable for students in the third or fourth year of study at a North American university or in the second or third year at a university in Europe.

教科書・参考書

非常に、よく使われている教科書ですが、自習用としては、難しいと思います。予習復習をしながら理解していって下さい。ALGEBRA I III （代数学 I、III）でも使います。授業で全てをカバーするわけではありませんが、これ一冊理解すれば、大学院入試、米国大学院の Comprehensive Examination にも大体十分と思います。

参考書

• Serge Lang "Undergraduate Algebra" second edition, Springer-Verlag
  広く使われている教科書。Lang は、教科書を書くのがとても上手だと評判です。

• Serge Lang "Algebra" third edition, Addison-Wesley 大学院レベルの教科書。勉強するのは、このほんの一部分ですが、レベルとしては、十分読むことができると思います。私（鈴木）は、大学２年生から、４年生まで、自主ゼミで、仲間と、この本をずっと勉強しました。

• 服部昭　「現代代数学」、「現代代数学演習」　朝倉書店
  永尾先生の教科書がでるまでは、良く使われていた教科書です。少し、難しいですが、「演習」も良く書かれています。

• van der Waerden "Modern Algebra", Springer
  　（銀林訳　「現代代数学」、「演習現代代数学」　東京書籍）
  古典的名著です。演習書も充実しています。

• 成田正雄　「初等代数学」　共立出版
  簡明に、かつ、具体的な例も豊富に書かれている素晴らしい本です。成田先生は、国際基督教大学で長年教えておられた先生です。惜しむらくは絶版なこと。しかし、図書館には２冊入っているようです。

• M. F. Atiyah and I. G. Macdonald　"Introduction to Commutative Algebra", Addison-Wesley
  環論は大きく分けると、可換環論と、非可換環論に分けられます。可換環論は、整数論や、代数幾何学につながり、その基本的な例は、有理整数環 Ｚ や、体の元を係数とする多項式環 K[x₁,...x_n] です。この本は、その方面に進むための準備を与える基本的な教科書です。一方、非可換環の基本的な例は全行列環です。非可換環論は、半単純環の理論等を経由して、表現論といわれる分野とつながっています。その入口を与えるものとして、次の本をあげておきます。
