On January 13, Dr. Kiyoko Ikegami, Director of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Tokyo Office had a special lecture on the Millennium Development Goals and Reproductive Health.
She obtained her masters degree at the Graduate School Division of Public Administration, ICU. After working at UNHCR, UN Headquarters and the Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP), she was assigned to the director of UNFPA Tokyo Office in 2002.
In her lecture, we explained 1) ‘One UN’ – current direction of UN system, 2) Millennium Development Goals, 3) Reproductive Health and Gender Issues around the world. Fellows could enrich their understanding on these issues especially because Dr. Ikegami spoke them based on her own experience.
The stories of 12 women confronting reproductive health and gender issues- unwanted pregnancy, young marriage, prostitution and others- were introduced in the latter part of the lecture. Fellows discussed measures against theses issues and considered the culturally sensitive approach. The lecture was conducted by participatory approach, and fellows raised many questions, concerns, and opinions, and could enjoy discussions.
