(On the Concept of Sinicization (chugoku-ka):
New Historical Paradigms and the Understanding of Present-day Realities)

Yonaha Jun is the author of a provocative new book: Chugokuka suru Nihon: Nittchu "bunmei no shototsu" issen-nen shi (The Sinicization of Japan: A Thousand Year History of the "Clash of Civilizations" between China and Japan), Bungei Shunju, 2011. From the dust jacket of the book: "Is Japan's 'progress' at a dead end? In the aftermath of the 3/11 disasters, the old paradigms of 'Westernization,' 'Modernization,' and 'Democratization' have fallen by the wayside. New keywords such as 'Sinicization (chugokuka)' and "Return to the Edo Period" and new story lines such as the Sinicization of Japan have emerged." The book is advertised as a "useful history of modern Japan."
Professor Yonaha will introduce his book and discuss his concept of Sinicization. He is looking forward to active engagement with members of the audience.

Experts and Environmental Knowledge in 1960s and 1970s Japan

This paper examines the role of experts (social and natural scientists) in the Japanese environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Pioneering antipollution advocates such Tsuru Shigeto, Miyamoto Ken’ichi, and Ui Jun played formative roles in stimulating and shaping public discourse on the environment, in introducing Japanese industrial pollution to the outside world, and in influencing landmark legislative and judicial developments. Because of their privileged status they were able to build strong international networks for the exchange of scientific information and the formation of political movements. One of their organizations, the Pollution Research Committee, conducted surveys of polluted areas such Yokkaichi City, organized influential international conferences, and offered expert witnesses in pollution court cases. With extensive financial and institutional support from the then Ministry of Health and Welfare, this committee and its members became pioneering environmental advocates, often advancing positions deeply at odds with the prevailing political and economic mindset. The paper thinks through the role of these environmental experts in Japan and in the emergent global environmental movement of the time.

On Escaping Asia:
the Meiji Restoration, the International System and the End of Dynastic Rule
in East Asia

The Meiji Restoration brought an end to the dynastic rule of the Tokugawa family and it began a period where Japan participated fully in the Western-dominated system of trade and diplomacy. After the Restoration Japan “escaped Asia,” to borrow Fukuzawa Yukichi’s famous phrase, and the subsequent collapse of the other ruling dynasties of East Asia seemed to validate the Meiji-era perception that Japan needed to distance itself from Asia. It is easy to lose sight, however, of the way that Japan’s participation in the international system contributed to the collapse of dynastic rule elsewhere in East Asia. In order to explain how the influence of the Meiji Restoration spread beyond Japan, this talk will explore how a complex interaction between Western diplomacy and Japanese diplomacy contributed to the collapse of dynastic rule throughout East Asia.

Representations of Japan in Hollywood films:
Cultural communication or Lack of communication?

Since the Second World War, a significant number of Hollywood movies have either been set in Japan or otherwise deal with American/Japanese relations, from Stuart Heisler’s Tokyo Joe (1949) to Sophia Coppola’s Lost in Translation (2003). Many of these films have been controversial from a number of angles, almost always linked to questions of cultural representation and feeding into or emerging out of the Orientalist debate which has above all accustomed us to recognise the inherent power relation representation involves. In this paper I will look at the range of themes these films have dealt with and consider whether they should be treated less as films ‘about’ Japan than about American attitudes towards the ‘foreign’ in general.

楽師の西と東ー中世ヨーロッパの音楽家はどこから来たのか
(Musicians West and East:
Where did Medieval European Musicians Come From?)

The origins of classical music and of musical notation (the staff with its five horizontal lines) used throughout the world today should be seen within the context of ethnomusicology of what is now known as “world music.”

There was an explosion of new musical forms in Europe in the medieval period, marked by the Gregorian Chants of the Roman Catholic Church and the orchestral music that took advantage of a variety of new musical instruments. By the 12th century, secular music and musicians made their appearance.

Where did these musicians come from? One set of explanations looks to the Arab and Islam world. The troubadours of the court and the jongleurs in the street in the 12th century, their performance style and their instruments may well have come to the Mediterranean world by way of what we now call the Middle East. The issue, however, has not been fully resolved. Some scholars, for example, look to ancient Rome for the origins of medieval forms of music, while others look further East.

We may never be able to give a definitive answer to this question. My talk will explore links to the Eastern Roman Empire and lines of cultural transmission between Asia and the Mediterranean world. We can try to re-examine the reception of new forms of music in medieval Christian Europe and the reception given to the musicians and performers. While the musicians and the sounds of their music has long vanished, we can derive valuable hints from textual and non-textual sources, including musical scores, instruments, paintings and other visual materials pointing toward Eastern origins of Western music.

Bach to Japan:  Reflections on Teaching and Rewriting the Cultural History of Japan

Professor Caiger was born in Japan and graduated from Sydney University and studied history at the University of London. He received his Ph.D. from the Australian National University where he began teaching Japanese history since 1966.  Now retired, he is reviewing his life as a scholar and teacher of modern Japanese cultural history.  He is the author (along with his former colleague Richard Mason) of one of the best general surveys of Japanese history: A History of Japan (Revised Edition), Tuttle Publishing. His talk will give a glimpse into the personal and professional life of one of the leading Western scholars of modern Japanese history. The title “Bach to Japan,” refers to his first visit to ICU in the 1960s when he attended a concert by the Sendai Bach Choir held in the ICU Church. Everyone welcome.

Human Emotions and Community in the Literary Thought of the Sorai School and Kokugaku

Human emotions were central to the philosophies of Ogyû Sorai (1666-1728) and his disciples, as well as their Kokugaku critics, such as Motoori Norinaga (1730-1801). These scholars all saw emotionality as the core of human nature, and argued that emotional connections between people were essential to a harmonious society. This talk discusses how these figures saw poetry as contributing to such a society through its capacity to express and communicate authentic emotions. At the same time, it argues that their new ways of valuing emotions were accompanied by new ideas about how emotions should be regulated and socialized.

Tsunami and Recovery:
A Report on 10 Days of Volunteer Work in Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture

The Great Eastern Japan Earthquake that struck Japan on March 11, 2011 resulted in a mammoth tsunami that robbed the lives of countless victims, making it the one of most destructive natural disasters in Japanese history. The explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant have added to the disruption of people’s lives. Many help and recovery plans have been announced and naturally many people are eager to engage in volunteer work. However, while many may wish to go to the affected areas to help, such actions may be dangerous if not taken with extreme care and caution.

The Institute of Asian Cultural Studies invites you to listen to a report by an ICU graduate, Mr. Nishida Masayuki, who spent ten days between April 2 and 12 working as a relief volunteer in Kamaishi, one of the areas hardest hit by the tsunami. Mr. Nishida majored in environmental anthropology, and did field work in a village in northern Thailand. When areas that suffered great damage. A symposium and exhibition was held which allowed ICU students and Mitaka citizens to know more about the recovery experience andengage in discussion and international exchange.

As the Asian Forum on April 19 we will be able to learn more from Mr. Nishida who will have just returned from ten days in Kamaishi City. He will be able to tell us about the reality of volunteer activities in devastated areas and about future plans, including long-range plans for relief and recovery. We hope that many students and Mitaka citizens will take advantage of this opportunity to think about the reality of the tsunami disaster and the limits and possibilities of what we can do to help.

("The Allure of Loneliness: Suffering and Longing for Self-Differentiation in the Modern Era")

  ("Performing language, culture and identities:
disinvention and reconstitution of language and culture")

Global mobility has transformed language learning in a lifelong task. The Common European Framework is representative of new needs in language teaching and learning. Teaching a language is no more limited to contents, but it expands into teaching “how to learn” and into offering tools for independent and creative learning. I shall present A Hypermedia Dictionary of Japanese Grammar: a project meant to involve the pleasure-related right-brain in grammar learning, so to lead to lifelong acquisition more than a temporary learning “for examinations only.”

Regional Comparison of Industrialization in Modern Japan"

This presentation will give a report of comparative analysis of several sites of porcelain
manufacturing in the early Meiji Japan. While porcelain manufacturing developed in many regions under the Tokugawa regime, it experienced a series of changes along with political and social dynamics in the mid 19th-century. Variant relations with political authorities and access to the markets shaped different contexts of manufacturing porcelains. Regional comparison illuminates multiple paths of industrialization in modern Japan.

The data in this study indicated that institutional and teaching practices keep English out of the reach of poor students. The presentation shows how pedagogical practices differ according to the instructional medium used in the classroom. In highlighting differences between pedagogical practices, this presentation will provide an in-depth examination of two institutions: one, a rural Bengali-medium school; the other, an urban Bengali-medium school. It will also present differences in socio-educational practices between both schools.

"Managing Minorities in Prewar and Wartime Japan:
Approaches to Assimilating and Incorporating Koreans and Burakumin Compared"

From the 1920s through the Pacific War, Japanese government, in cooperation with various philanthropic organizations, devised a variety of policies for dealing with the problems of Japan’s two most widespread minority groups: labor migrants from the Korean colony and the modern descendants of early modern outcaste groups known as the Burakumin. In regard to both, the state acted on very similar concerns in pursuing a means of assimilation and incorporation. At the same time, the state had very different views of what constituted the “problem” posed by each minority and what needed to be done to address these. Despite the similar socio-economic situations faced by Koreans and Burakumin, these differences reveal the state’s focus on cultural proximity as a means of determining the loyalty of minorities and the degree to which they had a legitimate claim to membership in the nation.
