The program in ICU's Philosophy of
Education is uniquely based on global perspectives rooted in liberal
arts education, and as such, international dimensions in contemporary
educational issues are examined on diverse topics ranging from
philosophical studies including Christian philosophy of education and
development-oriented sector analysis in education. Education has been
interpreted in its broadest sense and our program covers not only
formal education under the national policy and institutional framework
but also indigenous non-formal education and informal education in
developing countries. Close contact and cooperation with international
agencies has been maintained, including ODA, UN and NGOs operating in
literacy, non-formal education and EFA ("Education for All"). Our
program graduates often pursue academic careers in higher education,
secondary-school education, and development cooperation in education
through UN, ODA, Development Banks, development corporations,
consulting firms and NGOs.

The original goal of the program,
which itself characterizes the goals of the Graduate School — Division
of Education at the time of ICU's foundation, was to pursue new
principles and philosophies of education for a new Japan after World
War II. As such, the main objectives are based on democratic principles
and ideals focusing on relentless respect for human dignity, a
Christian understanding of individuals, and an international and global
perspective. Therefore, our program in the Philosophy of Education
consists of (a) Philosophy of Education, (b) History of Western
Educational Thought, (c) History of Japanese Educational Thought and
(d) Christian Philosophy of Education with Methods of Comparative
Education.
