Second Year Courses

Research Writing (RW) Course

All students finish their work in the ELA by taking the Research Writing course. This course is the culmination of all the courses in the ELA Program. The aim is to serve as a bridge between the ELA and the CLA. It provides an opportunity to explore a particular academic topic, with emphasis on students' critical thinking, analytical reading, research, and writing skills. The RW course has four classes each week, including some tutorial sessions. Stream 1 students take RW in the autumn term of their first year. Stream 2 students take RW in winter term of their first year. Stream 3 students take RW in spring, autumn or winter term of their second year. Unless they have been exempted, Stream 4 students take a course called Foundations of Research Writing in the spring term of their second year, and then take RW in either the autumn or winter term of their second year. Most sections of RW offer a particular academic topic, and students in Streams 2, 3, and 4 can give their preferences for which topics they find most interesting. All RW sections have the same research writing requirements, and all students will produce a major research paper by the end of the course.

Foundations of Research Writing (FRW) Course

This course provides Stream 4 students with additional instruction and experience in research writing prior to taking the Research Writing course. It is intended to further supplement the academic writing covered in the first year of Stream 4 and to provide a transition to the Research Writing course.
