Under the title, “Comprehensive Peace Studies”, International Christian University applied for the COE Program of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in the fiscal year 2003, and our application was successful.
For ICU, this selection has special significance. One of the aims of ICU is “establishing an academic tradition of freedom and reverence for world peace, based on Christian ideals and the education of individuals of conscience, internationally cultured and with a strong sense of citizenship in a democratic society.” “Comprehensive Peace Studies” reflects this foundation ideal and the aim of ICU. The selection for the COE program is a recognition of our existence and of our ideals.
ICU is the only institution to be selected in the area of “Peace Studies.” As a reason for this selection, the Ministry of Education stated: “Generally speaking, Peace Studies at ICU are already at an international level, but we hope it will progress further.”
Succinctly stated: “ICU’s foundation ideal and aim of aspiration for peace are not just the business of ICU, but represent Japanese Peace Studies in the world.” In this age of uncertainty, we must brace ourselves and move forward. (April, 2004)
