Research and Education for Peace, Security and Conviviality

Project 3: Conviviality, Education, Gender

Researchers working on this Project: Fujita, Tanaka, Mikanagi, Wasilewski, Akihiro Chiba, and others

With the progress of globalization, we live in an increasingly multi-cultural and ethnic society. In light of this historical context, this Project will pursue how people with different cultural backgrounds can live in harmony through the perspectives of education theory, sociology, political science, psychology and international development education. We will consider the concepts and framework necessary for our studies in gPeace, Security and Convivialityh from the viewpoints of educational theory, educational sociology and psychology. These studies will seek the optimal approach in which various types of education such as peace education, democratic education, education for international understanding, and welfare education should be implemented in civil society which is plagued by anxiety and in plural society. Studies in inter-cultural communication will probe into how various ethnic groups can live in harmony while maintaining a cultural identity of their own. We also plan to build and expand a gender studies network in East Asia founded on sociological and political theories.

Topics for this Project will include post-conflict Asian regions such as Afghanistan in terms of international development education for reconciliation and conviviality, and the problem of gender for human security. All studies will approach problems from a global perspective to foster a harmonious civil society in which people can actively participate and openly communicate.

Special Collaboration Project: Joint Research with Washington State University (WSU)

ICU has signed a contract with WSU for research and educational exchange. The two universities plan to form a grand theory for gPeace, Security and Convivialityh as well as conduct pertinent public opinion surveys in Japan and the U.S.

2 A Grand Theory and Concrete Policy Recommendations

The central theoretical and practical mission of Comprehensive Peace Studies lies in building a grand theory to integrate the three Projects and making germane policy recommendations. Human security, gAnzengaku,h proposed by Professor Yoichiro Murakami, and conviviality form the core of this grand theory. Human security refers to the pursuit of basic conditions for individual safety through administrative measures and community formation, to allow individuals to live as they wish with dignity. gAnzengakuh refers to a new interdisciplinary approach that studies how to secure safety in science and technology, the environment, medical care, food, and so forth. Conviviality covers wisdom and joy necessary to live in harmony with others out of mutual respect while accepting independence and individuality.

Today we live in stressful times threatened by environmental problems, international terrorism, anti-terrorism wars, ethnic conflict, refugee problems, poverty, starvation, drugs and AIDS. Human security and conviviality are key concepts in tackling these multiple anxieties and threats. Establishing a Grand Theory in Comprehensive Peace Studies for gPeace, Security and Convivialityh will enable us to make concrete policy recommendations.
