1 The Three Projects

The ICU COE Program aims to make ICU a global research and education for gComprehensive Peace Studies.h The Program also seeks to realize gPeace, Security and Convivialityh in broad areas from an interdisciplinary perspective. This Program is comprised of the Three Pertinent Projects described below and the Joint Research Project with Washington State University (WSU). It aims to integrate the fruits of the Projects into gComprehensive Peace Studiesh through the formation of networks and collaborative research.

Project 1: Peace, Human Rights, Governance

Researchers working on this Project: Ueta, Mogami, Schoenbaum, Sasagawa, Kunugi, Takahashi, Shin Chiba, Tollefson, and others

This Project aims to pursue theories in gPeace, Security and Convivialityh by focusing on key topics (peace-building, human security, right to live in peace, war responsibility, reconciliation and conviviality, pacifism, global civil society, global governance) from specialized disciplines of peace studies, political science, law, international relations, and international law, as well as make recommendations for policy and institutional formulation. This Project covers various subjects such as peace movements and pacifism, the possibility of applying the EU model to Asian countries, humanitarian intervention, and peace-building. Many scholars on the Project have extended their various research and education networks to include North America, Europe and East Asia. They will work further in collaboration with the international community to pursue theories and feasible measures that empower humankind to enjoy security through realizing administrative policy and forming civil society.

Project 2: Security, Environment, Sustainability

Researchers working on this Project: Miyazaki, Murakami, Kotani, Masaru Nishio, Takashi Nishio, Kitahara, Greenfield, and others

Modern civilized society entails various types of anxiety and complicated risks. To pursue what we can do to build a secure and safe society, this Project will promote research and education for gPeace, Security and Convivialityh in the areas of natural environment, science & technology and psychology. Creating a safe space in the human mind, as well as securing safety in food, the living environment and medical care, will be considered from multi-lateral perspectives such as history of science & technology, gAnzengaku,h science & technology studies, psychology and nuclear physics.

To enable people to live in harmony with nature, we will study actual administrative and social measures, such as forest management systems to preserve our land, and corporate management and economic activities founded on a cooperative rather than competitive principle. We will construct theories concerning safety and protection of the environment as well as make concrete recommendations on measures and policy by indicating standards for environmental policy, compiling manuals for safety in food as well as measures to prevent radioactive contamination.
